Transplant Center The MUSC Transplant Center provides comprehensive transplant services to adult and pediatric citizens of South Carolina and the Southeast. The transplant program began with Dr. William Vallotton performing the first corneal transplant in 1958. Since then, MUSC has established six more transplant programs: kidney in 1968; blood and marrow transplant and heart in 1987; liver in 1990; pancreas in 1991; and small bowel in 1994. MUSC is one of the select centers in the country able to perform living donor procedures to help patients who require liver transplantation. All patients referred for transplantation are extensively evaluated by a multidisciplinary team of health care specialists coordinated and directed by the transplant surgeon or physician. Predetermined patient-selection criteria have been established based on the most current standards in a given transplant specialty and are available from the individual programs. Once a patient is accepted as a candidate for transplantation, he is followed closely by a transplant coordinator. Extensive educational materials and teaching are provided to patients and families to ensure understanding of the transplant process, treatment and follow-up responsibilities. When an appropriate donor is available, the decision to transplant is made jointly by the transplant surgeon or physician and other specialists according to pre-established guidelines. All patients are cared for by trained medical and nursing staff both preoperatively and postoperatively.
